Webinar: Design, effectiveness and research - serious games

Webinar: Design, effectiveness and research - serious games
Reflections on AMEE 2021 - join members of AMEE TEL Committee and share their experiences of designing and using serious games for skills training in the medical curriculum. Serious games are increasingly being used for education. They provide challenging, often motivating forms of learning. What design characteristics make them effective and motivating; and why? And what are critical factors for successful implementation? Finally, we’ll discuss how research on effectiveness of games can be performed and share results.

Time: 14:00 - 15:00hrs (UK Time)

Introduction/Summary of theme as it was presented in 2021
This webinar will address the potential and the main characteristics of serious games and share the experiences of designing and using two serious games for skills training in our medical curriculum. We will share our considerations and experiences in the blended design and the implementation of these games. In addition, we will explain how we perform design-based research on serious games, using game-data and other measures to gain insight in the learning process and results. We will also share our results and lessons learned in this type of research.

Educational Needs or Gaps to be Addressed:
This webinar will address the questions related to designing, implementing and researching serious games for health profession education, sharing experiences based on the implementation of games in the medical curriculum.
Aim/Learning Objectives:
  1. Gain insight into the potential benefits and challenges of serious games for education and (skills) training, and in the design process.
  2. Become aware of challenges in the implementation of games and the critical success factors.
  3. Gain insight in how game-based research on learning processes and results can be set-up and what we know so far.

Format and Interactivity:
The webinar will be interactive, using attendees input to deepen the information we provide and to have an active discussion. Attendees will be invited to share their experiences,
develop their ideas on game design and research in their own context. We will use interactive questions, discussion and a Breakout Room session.

Anticipated Outcomes:
  • Attendees will have a better understanding of the benefits and challenges of games in education, and what is involved in the design process.
  • Attendees will be familiar with important steps to take when implementing a game in the medical curriculum.
  • Attendees will have knowledge on design-based research on serious games.
Target Audience:
Educationalists, teachers, educational coordinators and directors, clinical educators, interested in serious games and simulation in education.

  • Access to the webinar is completely free and open to non-AMEE members.
